Israeli tourists killed in Bulgaria bus blast

The aftermath of an explosion on a bus carrying Israeli tourists at Burgas International Airport in Bulgaria on July 18, 2012

UPDATE 2 on 19th of July 2012

A bus carrying Israeli youth has exploded in a Bulgarian resort, killing at least six people and wounding dozens, police and hospital officials said.

“There are six bodies on the scene — one critically wounded died at the hospital and two seriously injured are in intensive care. Thirty more people are being treated,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced in a statement.

The death toll is expected to rise as more than 40 other people were reportedly on the bus when the incident took place, Bulgarian officials said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Wednesday’s blast “an Iranian terror attack” and promised a tough response.

No Iranian official has commented on the incident as of yet but Iran’s state-owned TV has rejected the claims of Netanyahu and called them “ridiculous” and “sensational.”

The explosion comes on the 18th anniversary of a 1994 bomb attack on the headquarters of Argentina’s main Jewish organisation by an Iranian-backed Hezbollah suicide bomber, which killed 85 people.
